Balloon on a string with let it go
Black and grey · Flash
A single shaded balloon floats at the top of the image, tied to a long thin string that runs down the page. The words let it go are written in a simple lowercase script below the string. The balloon is shaded in soft grey pencil, with a light highlight on one side, and the design sits on a plain off-white background.

Mrs Eileen Dacre, who had taught them all their letters, kept a tin of string in her handbag. She handed a length to each person at the door and said nobody left the hall with a thing they had not tied to the end of it. Walter Hobb tied on his brother's unpaid loan. Joan Ashby tied on the spelling bee she had lost in 1964 by one letter, the second e in necessary. Ruth tied nothing and stood by the tea urn with her string coiled round her wrist.
At nine o'clock the caretaker brought out a bag of balloons from the cupboard where the nativity costumes lived. Eileen told them to blow their grievances in and knot the neck. They did. The hall went quiet, then loud again, as sixty-one pale grey globes bumped against the ceiling like something wanting out.
Ruth was last to the door. She tied her string to a balloon the colour of dust and stood on the step with the wind pulling at it. Eileen said, let it go, the way she used to say it when a child would not give back a pencil. Ruth opened her fingers. The string ran out through her hand and up, and for a long moment she could see it climbing above the car park, small and steady, before the light took it.
