Strawberry ice cream cone flash design

Dotwork · Black and grey · Flash

A black line drawing of an ice cream cone topped with a whole strawberry, swirled cream, and scattered sprinkles. A bow with a small heart sits across the middle of the cone, and the lower waffle cone is shaded with a fine crosshatch lattice. The image is in black ink on white with bold outlines, stippled dots on the strawberry, and no colour.

The wind off the slipway took the ribbon twice before Mr Pettifer tied it properly, so by the time the queue reached the kiosk the bow was already lopsided and the strawberry had slid to one side of the swirl. Nobody in Cragwick ever ordered a plain cone. You asked for strawberry or you were sent up the road to the chip shop.

My aunt Hester rolled the cones each morning at the back of the shop, the waffle lattice pressed so fine you could see the sea through it when the light came in low. She piped the cream in three rising coils and never once let a sprinkle reach the pavement. A cone was a promise, she said, and a promise dropped was a sin, though she never said whose sin it was.

The summer the harbour wall cracked, a boy called Idris came down every evening with a coin hot in his fist and asked for a strawberry cone with the berry taken off. He wanted the fruit, not the cream. Hester gave it to him for nothing, and then, because she was Hester, she wrapped the empty cone in the blue paper she kept for weddings.

Years later he came back with a boat that had no name and a faded bow tied to the stern rail. He bought one cone and ate the berry first, the way he always had. Hester sealed the lid and said nothing. We kept the kiosk open until the sprinkles ran out, and the lattice on the last cone still caught the sea.
