Ichthys fish and Jeremiah 29:11 on upper back
Lettering · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A black tattoo on the upper back shows an outlined Ichthys fish with a small cross drawn inside its body. The script text Jeremiah 29:11 sits above the fish in a single black line. The ink is solid black with no shading or colour, and the image is a close, slightly angled shot against a dark background.

Ada had mended nets on the Cromarty quay since the spring her father stopped coming back in the evenings, and she had learned that the sea kept its own accounts. The boats that went out on the ebb did not always return on the flood. Nobody in the village spoke of it at the bench where the women sat with their needles and tarred twine, but everybody counted.

The first fish came up in the mesh of the Morag, a net the men had left folded in the hut for a month. Caught in the knots was a slate no bigger than a playing card, scratched with a verse in her father's careful hand: For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the Lord. Beneath it he had drawn a fish in one unbroken curve, with a small cross cut into its belly, as if he had been in a hurry to mark it as his.
She carried it to the minister, who turned it over twice and said the verse was from Jeremiah, written to people who had lost everything and were told to plant gardens anyway. He did not say why her father had hidden it in a net. He did not need to.
Ada sat that night with the slate on the table and the lamp turned low. Outside, the boats knocked against the stones. She took her father's knife and, very carefully, scored the same fish into the underside of the bench where the women sat, so that whoever reached for the twine next would find it there.
