The lamb was wedged against the hurdle where the wind had piled the drifts. Beside the gatepost someone, years ago, had driven in a plain cross cut from two offcuts of ash, nailed where the old boundary stone used to stand. Nobody on the farm remembered who put it there. Your grandmother said it marked the shepherd who drowned in the bog, and your uncle swore it was for the bullock that went through the ice on the pond. You had never asked which story was true, and the cross had outlasted both of them.

You knelt in the snow and got the lamb inside your coat, its ribs knocking against yours, and walked back with the dog pressed to your knee. Halfway down the track the cloud thinned and the sky went pale and flat, and the cross was a dark stroke against the white behind you.

At the kitchen door your father stood with a towel over his shoulder. He took the lamb without a word, looked past you to the hedge line and the small black mark of the cross, then nodded once, which from him was a whole sermon.
