It's gone one in the morning and the chip shop on Brunswick Street has finally pulled its shutter down, so I'm writing this at the kitchen table with the radiator ticking like it's counting something. You'll laugh, but I went up to the harbour office today to see if they'd kept the logbook from the night the Marguerite came in short of a crew. Mr Abara remembered you straight away. He said you were the only lad who didn't swear at the winch.

The office is a box above the fish market now, all glass and fluorescent light, and the clerk was young enough to call me love. I asked about the drawing you left on the back of the manifest, the little fish you sketched with one line and a curl for a tail. He said they'd kept it. Not on purpose, he said. It got pinned to the noticeboard and nobody had the heart to take it down.

I stood there a while listening to the gulls and the late buses hissing on the wet road outside. I thought about how you always said a fish is the simplest thing to draw and the hardest to draw right, because every line has to earn its place or the whole thing sinks.

I'm enclosing the logbook page in this envelope, and the little fish is in the corner, still there. Come home when the tide lets you. The fish is waiting, and so am I.
