Close-up of a fine line black script tattoo reading immeasurably more across the inner forearm, on a light skin tone.

Immeasurably more script on a forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

The tattoo is the phrase immeasurably more written in a slanted, joined cursive script across the inner forearm, with more on a second line beneath. The linework is thin and even in solid black ink, with no shading. The photograph is taken outdoors against a blurred background, with a patterned navy top at the left edge of the frame.

You laughed and said that was counting. You were right, of course. I have a ledger in my coat now, with the sums written in pencil so the damp cannot blot them out, and every evening I add another line.

The harbourmaster's boy sold me a bottle of ink this morning for a penny more than it is worth, and I paid it gladly, because it is the good blue kind that does not fade. I have been practising my hand on the back of a chart. The letters lean forward when I write quickly, as if they are trying to get to the end of the sentence before I lose my nerve. I thought you would like that. You always said my capitals looked like tired men hurrying for a train.

The Ilse Marie sails on Thursday, weather permitting, and the captain says it will permit. I will be aboard her when she clears the breakwater, and I will not look back at the town, because you told me once that looking back makes the rope pull harder. So I am writing this now, while the ink is wet, to tell you what I could not say at the gate: the sums in my ledger were never debts. They were only the ways I found to say I would come home.

Yours in a hand that is getting steadier, Tomas.
