Isaiah 46:4 script on a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A black and white photograph of an inner forearm with the words isaiah 46:4 written in a thin, flowing script. The linework is fine and even, with a slightly uneven hand-lettered feel, and the ink is solid black with no shading. The text runs horizontally across the centre of the forearm, with a plain bedsheet and a dark grey sleeve filling the background.

He is lighter than the coal ever was, though you would never say so. He smells of Woodbines and Dettol. Halfway up he grips your collar and tells you the minister read chapter forty-six, verse four, on Sunday, the bit about bearing and carrying right into grey hairs, and that he thought it was padding until now. You say it is early for sermons. He laughs until he coughs, and you stand on the fourth step and wait for the cough to let go of him.
At the top you set him on an upturned crate. He tells you to take the good trowel home, the one with the ash handle, and to keep an eye on the bed by the wall, because the potatoes go in when the blackthorn flowers and not a day before. You promise. Below, the terraces sit in their grid and the headgear on the hill stands still with its wheel painted red, and you realise you have been holding your breath the whole climb, as if the weight might still be yours to hold.
