Black script lettering tattoo reading 'Simple like a mountain is simple' across the forearm, photographed against a white wall and bathroom background.

Script quote on forearm: simple like a mountain

Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A fine black script quote runs across the forearm in two lines, reading 'Simple like a mountain is simple' with flowing, connected letterforms. The linework is thin and even, with no shading or colour, and the text sits centrally across the arm. The background shows a light, slightly warm indoor setting, with a partly visible person in a white top and denim shorts and a plaid shirt at the edge of the frame.

He said it like it was a joke, and for years I thought it was. He'd come down from a fell in Cumbria with his boots full of sheep dip and his hat in his hand, and I'd ask him how the climb went, and he'd say it was simple. Never mind the rain. Never mind the scree that slid out from under him near Helvellyn and took his good torch. Simple.

It took me till the year of the hip to understand him. I'd stop on the stairs with the shopping and think, this is a hill, it has one job, which is to be the height it is. It doesn't argue with the weather. It doesn't wonder if it ought to be somewhere else. You just put one boot in front of the other and the mountain keeps being a mountain, and in the end, so do you.

Pass me that trowel. No, the small one. There, see how the stones have pushed up through the path? Roots don't ask permission either. Write your name in the soil with the stick, go on, letters joined up like the old script. The wind will take the first bit. That's how it's meant to go.
