Infinity design with love and family script
Lettering · Mixed · Flash
A drawn tattoo design on paper showing an infinity symbol with the words Love and Family in script on either side. A green and purple feather runs along the loop, with small birds in purple, blue and green flying along the lines. The linework is fine and the colour is soft and blended, with the design centred on a plain cream background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction
The road out of Tarrow Flats ran straight as a ruled line for forty miles, and on it a woman named Bettany Coyle once counted eleven hundred fence posts before the dust took the rest. She was driving her brother's old pickup back to the coast with a feather tucked behind the sun visor, a green and violet thing she'd found caught in a barbed wire gate, and every few miles she'd pull over and look at it as though it might tell her which way home lay.

What it told her, in the end, was nothing. But birds came. Little finches and swifts, purple-throated and blue-bellied, dropped out of a sky with no clouds in it and flew alongside the truck as if they'd been sent to keep her company. Her brother Ansel used to say the birds were just going somewhere too, and that was all anyone was doing on a road like that. She'd laughed at him for it at the time. She didn't laugh now.
At the crossroads near the salt pan she stopped, and the birds stopped with her, settling on the wire of a fence that didn't seem to have a beginning or an end. She took a pencil from the glovebox and wrote two words on the back of a petrol receipt, one on each side of a loop she drew without lifting the point. Love on the left. Family on the right. The loop was the only shape the road had ever made sense in.
When the sun went down she turned the truck around. The feather was still behind the visor, and the birds were still flying, and the road, for once, was going exactly where she was.
