Infinity symbol with love and family script

Fine line · Mixed · Flash

The design shows an infinity symbol with the word Love in flowing script on the left and Family in script on the right. A green feather rises from the loop, with small leaves and butterflies in purple, teal and green along the lines. The linework is fine and the colour is applied in soft, light shading against a plain beige background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

By three in the morning the ward has gone quiet in the way you have learned to trust, the monitors murmuring to one another down the corridor like neighbours through a wall. You are topping up hand gel on Bay C when you notice the feather on the lino by the sluice door. It is long and green at the tip, fading to a grey quill, and it has no business being there. Nobody on this ward keeps birds. Nobody keeps anything much past the second week.

Mr Okonedo in bed six has been awake since midnight, asking the same question in different coats. Is it Thursday. Has his daughter rung. You sit on the edge of the chair with your clipboard and answer each version the same way, because consistency is most of the job. Somewhere between the third answer and the fourth he tells you his wife used to pin feathers into her hat and call them her little pieces of weather. You write nothing down. You hold the feather up to the strip light and it throws a faint teal shadow across his blanket, and for a moment there are small violet wings in it that you could swear were not there before.

At half four his observations settle. You do the rounds, check the cannula sites, and when you come back the chair is empty except for the clipboard, which he has turned face down as if ashamed of its neatness. The feather lies on the blanket where he left it. Beside it, in pencil that wanders off the lines, he has drawn a figure eight, looped so many times the paper has gone thin, and written at one end the only word the notes will ever need to hold. Love. Then, at the other end, Family.
