Infinity symbol with feather and birds design
Fine line · Colour · Flash
A coloured sketch of a tattoo design shown on a sheet of paper, with a green pencil at the left edge. An infinity symbol forms the frame, with the script words Love on the left loop and Family on the right, and a feather crossing the centre. Small birds in purple, green and teal fly off along the loops, with soft shading on the feather and a fine, delicate linework style.

The letter from Aunt Pearl came tied with green garden twine, and the lock-keeper's wife had already steamed it open to see what was inside. I read it on the cabin roof of the Marigold, boots in the wet grass, while a line of martins lifted off the reeds below Ambry Weir. Pearl wrote the way she talked, all loops and no full stops. Near the bottom she had underlined two words twice: come home.

The river had been turning me in circles for eleven years. Weir to mill, round the great bend, then back along the far bank past the same willows in the same order. My father used to say the Thames was an argument it never finished. I had stopped minding somewhere near Reading, and I had come to understand that the water was never going anywhere it had not already been.
That evening I tied up at the old wharf and walked to the crossroads where the bus used to stop. Pearl was waiting in her wellies, turning a grey feather in the light she had found on the towpath. She didn't say hello. She said the martins had come back early, and someone had to count them, so I counted seven before she started laughing at me for taking it so seriously.
We walked the towpath home together, the long way, the way the river goes. At the bend she pressed the feather into my palm. 'You never did learn the short way round,' she said. Behind us the martins rose off the water in a flash of blue and green, looped out over the field until they were only specks, and then came back to circle the same bend, as if the river had asked them to.
