Heart padlock and key with script letters
Lettering · Black and grey · Flash
A shaded pencil drawing of a heart-shaped padlock with a keyhole, a small ornate key set diagonally beside it, and large flowing script letters with swirled flourishes at the top left and lower right. The linework is soft and graduated, with grey shading on the lock and a dark, smudged background behind the motif. The composition is centred on the padlock, with the letters framing it on a plain white ground.

You have carried the ring of keys for eleven years and never once been asked for the small one. Brother Gilbert presses it into your palm in the cold of the chapter house, still warm from his fist, and says only that the abbot wished it opened after the Office of the Dead. The key is no longer than your little finger, its bow worked like a curl of ivy. You know the box it belongs to. It sits beneath the abbot's window, a heart of tarnished iron no bigger than a plum, and no one has ever seen it unlocked.

After Compline the passage is black except for the lamp you carry. You kneel on the flagstones and fit the key. It turns with a sound like a bird settling, and the shackle springs free. Inside lie folded papers tied with grey thread, a dozen or more, each addressed in the same looping hand: To the one who kept the gate. Your breath catches on the second, then the third, all of them the same, all of them unsent, the ink gone brown along the folds.
Gilbert told you the abbot came to the house at nineteen, running from a marriage he had never agreed to, and that he wrote every year on the feast of Saint Hilda. You read the dates. The last is dated the week before he took his vows, and it stops mid-sentence, as if the nib had been lifted and never set down again.
You do not read the rest. You fold the letters back along their creases, lay them in the iron heart and press the shackle until it clicks. Then you leave the small key on the windowsill, where the moon falls across the ivy curl, and walk back through the dark with the lamp held low.
