Heart with swirling flourishes
Traditional · Black and grey · Flash
A line drawing of a heart sits at the centre of a symmetrical arrangement of curling, blade-like flourishes and leaf shapes. The heart is shaded with horizontal hatching on one side, and several outlined circles sit around the edges. The design is drawn in solid black outline on a white background with no colour.

Ansel Dray had cut seals for the Chandlers' Guild for thirty-one years, and in all that time nobody had asked him to leave the shadow off a heart. Mistress Orla Penrose wanted it plain. She stood in his workshop above the wharf with her gloves folded in one hand and said the Guild had never trusted a heart that looked as if it had been left out in the rain.

He took the brass plate anyway. The vines went in first, blade-thin and curling up from the bottom edge like frost on a window, then the leaves, cut so sharp that a thumb run along them came away beaded red. The heart went in last. He hatched one side with a fine burin, line after line, because a heart with no shade is only a shape, and a shape cannot keep anything to itself. The little rings he left hollow, the way bubbles rise through the harbour water before anyone sees them break.
She came back on the first frost, with a letter that had travelled north on a coal barge and been water-stained at every fold. Her husband had not written it. Someone else had, and it bore no name at all, only a question. She wanted to answer it under the Guild's mark, and she pressed the seal into the wax with both hands, leaning her weight into it the way you would close a stubborn drawer.
When she lifted it away, the vines had left a clean white relief, but the heart had come out half dark, its hatched side pooling grey in the wax. Orla looked at it for a long time. Then she folded the letter with the shadow face down, and said that this was the one she should have asked for in the first place.
