Infinity script with playing card suits

Fine line · Black and grey · Photo

A fine line infinity symbol wraps around the script words Curiouser and Curiouser, which run along its loops. To the right, three solid black-grey shapes resembling playing card suits, a spade, a heart and a club, sit at the end of the line with soft shading. The photograph is taken close up against plain skin, with the tattoo centred and the linework clearly visible.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Tobias Ferrow had been hired to paint the roses in a walled garden at the edge of Hollin Vale, and the work was simple until the third week, when the gate began to open on its own. Beyond it ran a gravel path he had never seen, looping through laurel and pleached limes, and every time he walked it he came back to the same iron gate, as if the garden had been folded like a letter.

On the seventh loop he found three gardeners on their knees beside a bed of spades. They were painting thorny stems black, and they had the careful, frightened faces of men who serve someone they do not trust. "Mind the hearts," said the smallest one, not looking up. "They sulk if the sun gets at them." Beside them stood a row of clubs, clipped into neat round shapes. When Tobias asked why the Queen wanted her roses so tightly trimmed, the smallest gardener only said, "Curiouser and curiouser," the way a man says grace, and went back to his brush.

He painted through the night, and each loop the paint ran a little further, until the spades were black as ink and the hearts bled their colour into the gravel. At dawn the Queen's herald came down the path, counted the roses, and found one white bloom still standing. Tobias had missed nothing. He had only been slow to see that the white rose was the one thing in the garden that had never been told which colour to be. The herald took the brush from his hand and dipped it in the pot.

The gate swung open onto the lane where Tobias had started. He walked home with a red spade drying on his thumb, and when he looked back, the path was still there, curling away into the limes like a loose thread.
