Winged angel with halo tattoo

Black and grey · Photo

A tattoo of an angel with a small halo above its head, outlined in dark black linework. The wings and flowing robe are filled with soft grey and brown shading that gives them some depth. The design fills most of the frame against a plain area of skin.

The last shift has come up from the drift, and the back room above the Co-op is crowded with men who swear they only came to watch. You have the stencil pressed and the machine warm, but the man on your chair has not asked for a snake or a swallow. He wants an angel, small enough to sit on the inside of his wrist, for his brother who went down number four in March and never came back up. He says it flatly, the way men here say everything that matters, and you tell him to keep his arm still.

You draw the wings first, because the wings are where the grief goes. The outline is clean, the feathers sweeping back like gulls over the pithead, and then the robe, which falls in long soft folds you have to shade rather than line, so the grey settles into it the way pit dust settles into a collar. Someone behind you strikes a match. The halo is the hard part. You try it three times in pen, and each time it looks like a bicycle ring or a shut eye, until you remember the brother's lamp hanging on the nail by the door, its brass rim scuffed bright where he used to tap it against his helmet.

So you borrow that ring. It sits above the head, small and slightly crooked, the way a thing does when it has been handled for years. The needle goes in and the man does not flinch, though his jaw works once. When you wipe the bead of blood away, the shading has taken the way you hoped, a soft brown bloom that looks lit from underneath.

He studies it for a long time and then asks what he owes you. You tell him the lamp on the nail has never been sold, and that is payment enough for now. He pulls his sleeve down over the angel and leaves the door open behind him, so the cold comes in and every man in the room turns towards the light.
