Infinity symbol and cherry blossom on a wrist

Botanical · Forearm · Mixed · Photo

A close photograph of a wrist with a black linework infinity symbol. A branch of pink cherry blossom flowers with green stems wraps around and along the symbol. The pink petals are shaded softly against the black outline, and the design sits centred on the wrist against a dark background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The cutting had survived three days in the glovebox, wrapped in a tea towel that smelled of diesel, and Nell Harcourt was not going to let it die on the last forty miles of a road that looped back on itself like a dropped length of string. The highway out of Calder Wells ran a figure of eight through the scrub. She passed the same dead windmill twice, once heading east and once heading west, and both times the sun sat on the same bleached fence post as if it had been pinned there.

Her grandmother had grown cherry trees in a yard in Kent and had told her that a branch only knew where it was going if you gave it a loop to follow. Nell had thought this was nonsense until she saw the buds swell on the second morning, tight and pink as the inside of a shell. She had kept the cutting in water since the petrol station at Dry Fork, and it had not complained once.

By dusk the blossom had opened in a jam jar on the windowsill of the Starlite Motor Court, five flowers against the brown hills, the green stems bent into a curve that was almost a letter. Nell sat on the bed with a pencil and tried to draw the road as it had looked from above, two loops meeting at a single point, and gave up, because the point kept moving.

In the morning she drove the figure of eight once more with the window down. At the far end the road brought her back to the windmill, and the jar rattled on the passenger seat, and a single petal had come loose and stuck to the vinyl, pale and stubborn, like something she had decided to keep.
