Infinity symbol and feather design
Realism · Black and grey · Flash
A pencil drawing of a looping infinity symbol, with a feather lying diagonally across its centre so that the feather forms the crossing point. The feather has fine hatched strokes and soft shading along its barbs, while the infinity loops are bold, dark and smoothly graded. The plain pale background and centred composition keep the design clear.

Sit down, sit, the fire's still warm enough for a lie. You want the road? Then you want the loop. Out past Caliche Wells the old highway runs in a figure eight, two bends sharing one dry crossing where the tar gives out. Nobody built it that way. The surveyor, Ambrose Fell, drew it with a pencil he'd sharpened with his teeth, and when the county asked why, he said a road had to come back to where it started or it would never get anywhere.

Fell had a wife called Maren who kept a goose feather tucked in the band of her hat. Every morning she walked the crossing to see if the wind had shifted the sand. One March a gust tore the feather loose and laid it right across the middle of the crossing, quill down the centre, and there it stayed. Trucks swerved, goats refused the bend, and Fell, stubborn as the sun, would not pull it up. He said a thing that lies on a road like that is keeping the road honest.
The years went round. Maren walked both loops every dawn, counting her steps, one bend and then the other. Fell grew old and the pencil went blunt in his pocket. On the morning they buried him, the feather lifted off the sand and rode the wind back the way it had come, along the top of the eastern curve, and no one ever saw it on that road again.
So when you drive out there and the tar runs out, don't hurry. Go round once. Then go round again. That's all the road asks, and it's the only way it lets you leave.
