Infinity symbol design

Fine line · Black and grey · Flash

A single black infinity symbol, drawn as one continuous looped line that crosses over itself at the centre. The stroke thickens and thins slightly along its length, giving it a hand-inked feel. The design sits small and centred on a plain white background with no skin, shading or colour.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Every boat that worked out of Harrow Skerry knew the crossing, though none of the men liked to name it. Past the north ledge the sea ran in two lanes, one going out to Gannet Holm and round the white stone, the other coming home past the bell buoy. Where the lanes met there was a patch of flat water the fishermen called the knot. You could row into it at dawn and come out at dusk having gone nowhere, and the gulls would still be sitting on the same post.

Tamsin Rooke had lost her husband to the knot the spring before. She did not believe the sea was cruel, only particular, and so when her son Eli said he would find the end of the loop before the herring came in, she gave him the Mercy's tiller and a ball of tarred twine. "Tie off where you cross," she said. "Then you'll know the water when you see it again."

He sailed the lanes for three days. He rounded the holm, passed the bell, and came into the knot, where the water went glassy and his own wake rose up from the south to meet him, pale and old as a line of chalk on a slate. He made the twine fast to a cleat there and rowed on. At the stone he looked back and saw the Mercy coming out toward him through the flat water, with a boy in the stern lifting one hand. It was not him.

He came home on the fourth morning and found his mother on the quay with the same ball of tar in her lap. She had been mending it since he left. "You went round," she said, and asked him nothing more, because the herring were coming in and there was no more the loop could teach anyone.
