The road to Hallow Ford crossed the river on a stone bridge, curled back under itself at the toll house, and came out on the same bank it had left. Every cart therefore passed the same stone twice. Old Pell kept the barrier there. He said the road had been laid by people who wanted travellers to stop and think about where they were going, and he said it with the cheerfulness of a man who had never once been in a hurry.

Mira came up the eastern loop in the rain with a goat on a rope and a letter she could not read. Pell took her name for the ledger. He wrote it slowly, the pen dragging a thin tail off the last letter, and asked her to say it back to him. She did. He told her that was the first thing the road asked of anyone: to say who they were at the place where the two loops met, and to mean it.
She asked what happened if she said it wrong. Pell shrugged and said the road would hand her back to the western side, where she had started, and she would be sent round again. He had seen a man go round nine times. On the ninth he had laughed, given his name in a hurry, and walked straight across, and the road let him through. The goat, Pell added, had stayed behind for a week and then wandered off to the mill.
Mira said her name the way her grandmother had said it, with the long vowels of the valley. Pell lifted the bar. Behind her the rain stopped, and the road lay out in front of her as one unbroken line, running on and on. She could not tell whether she had crossed or been sent round again. The goat, at least, was sure of its own way.
