Infinity symbol with fingerprint heart
Black and grey · Flash
A black line drawing of an infinity symbol on a plain white background, with a heart filled with fine fingerprint ridge texture sitting on the upper left loop. The outline is drawn with a rough, slightly textured stroke, and the heart is shaded in dense black dots and lines. The composition is centred and isolated, with no skin or body visible.

Tuesday. The rain has found its way into the lost property cupboard again, so I have spent the morning drying a brown glove, an umbrella with a broken spine and a railway timetable from 1987 that somebody had annotated in pencil. Nobody claims the timetable. Nobody claims most things.

This afternoon a man came to the counter with an envelope and asked me to hold it for his sister, who travels up from Carlisle on the first Saturday of each month. Inside was a folded sheet of tracing paper with a drawing on it: a loop like a figure eight lying on its side, and in the upper loop a heart made of fingerprint ridges, dense as dark sand. Beneath it he had written in pencil, Ask her to check the ink is still there. I asked him what it meant. He said it was their mother's idea, not his, and that he had never been any good at explaining her ideas.
I logged it as found property, which is not strictly true, and put it in the tin marked E. Then I went out to the platform to watch the 16:40 pull away, which I do when I cannot settle. The train slid under the footbridge and its tail lights bent round the curve and came back, the way the drawing does, so that you could not tell where one ring stopped and the other began.
Saturday she came. Her thumb was grey at the pad, the same ink. She laughed, held the tracing paper up to the window and said the heart was her, and the line was everyone else who had ever been brave enough to hold on. I stamped her receipt and kept the tin shut. Some things are better left in the cupboard, where they keep their shape.
