A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The road out of Sallow Well ran dead straight for forty miles, and every morning Nell Greaves walked the first mile of it with a tin cup and a ball of red wool, because her husband Abel had gone east with the salt train and had promised he would come back the same way.

He did not come back the same way. The road bent round the dry lake called the Widow's Eye, and a man walking that loop might pass within sight of his own tracks a dozen times and never once see the town. Nell knew this because the old women at the well had told her, and because on the ninth day she saw a set of boot prints crossing hers, going the other way, and then crossing them again further on.

So she stopped trying to meet him at the end of the road. She sat at the place where the two arcs of the loop nearly touched, the narrow neck where the lake pinched the track, and she tied the wool to a creosote bush in a knot that folded back on itself, looping and crossing, the way the road did. Each day she tied one more pass. The wind pulled at it. Children from the well came out to watch the knot grow.

On the forty-first morning a cart came round the bend from the north. Abel drove it, with salt sacks pale under the sun and the red wool trailing from his wrist where the end had caught on the wheel. He stopped beside her and looked at the knot for a long time. Then he said, 'You have made the road into a heart,' and she said, 'No, I only followed it,' and they went home the short way, which is to say the long way round.
