Love script on the inner wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A close-up of a woman's wrist shows a small tattoo of the word love written in a cursive script. The linework is thin and even, in black ink with no shading. The image is in full colour, with the blurred street and crossing behind the hands and a gold bracelet and rings in sharp focus.

Dear Ivy,

The shop on Tallow Lane finally has its new window, and I am writing to you from a stepladder with a brush clamped in my teeth, which is no way for a man of my years to conduct business. Mr Farrant wanted the word LOVE across the glass in gold leaf, but the leaf kept lifting in the damp, so I switched to the thin script instead, the copperplate you taught me to hold without shaking. Three strokes of the pen and the word leaned over as if it were listening for something.
Your mother came by at noon to complain that the bakery sign opposite was too loud. I told her loud was what the bakery paid for. She did not laugh, but she stood a long while looking up at the L, and then she said the loop of it was the exact curve of the hook on her good kettle, the one she has not used since your father went to sea. I do not know what to do with that, so I am telling you.
Here is the matter. I need you back before the varnish sets. You are the only one with a steady enough hand for the final tail of the e, and I have made a mess of it twice already, with ink running down into the gap where the glass meets the frame. Bring the small sable brush with the bent handle, and leave the kettle where it is.
The light is going now and the lamps are coming on along the crossing. I will keep the top of the stepladder warm for you, as I always did. Come when the bell rings for the last tram. Yours in patience and turpentine, Walter.
