The 6.14 has been cancelled again, so I am writing this on the back of a timetable on the bench by platform four, where a man in a yellow bib has been sweeping the same square yard of tiles for twenty minutes. Mum would say I am wasting daylight. I am wasting it on purpose.

You will remember the feather from the hall at home, the grey one Dad found in the lane that winter and pinned above the clock. Yesterday I took it down and put it in my coat. When the wind came through the arches at Garrowby I opened my hand and it lifted, and then it came apart into starlings, eleven or twelve of them, going over the footbridge as if they had somewhere to be.

I keep thinking of the loop Dad drew on the back of the gas bill, the figure of eight lying on its side, and how he said you could run your finger round it forever and never reach the end. He wrote STAY on one side and STRONG on the other, the way he used to write notes in my lunchbox. I thought it was soppy. I think now it was the only instruction he knew how to give.

The train is in. I am getting on it. Tell Mum I have the feather and the birds, and the fare, and that I will be on the 9.02 tomorrow if the sky stays put.
