Black ink flash design of a feather dissolving into small birds, with the words stay strong in fine script looping through an infinity symbol.

Feather, birds and infinity script reading stay strong

Fine line · Black and grey · Flash

A black feather on a white background fades into a trail of small flying birds toward the upper left. The feather is shaded with fine hatched strokes, while the words stay strong are written in a thin, flowing script that forms an infinity loop beneath it. The design is monochrome and centred with plenty of open white space around it.

Bea, the bus broke down outside Tolley Wells at half past four, and the driver has wandered off somewhere with a spanner and a packet of biscuits, so I am writing this on the back of the timetable while I wait for a lift that may or may not come. The road out here runs straight for forty miles with nothing on either side but scrub and that pale, flat sky. You would hate it. You would have counted the telegraph poles by now.

A woman at the stop, Rhiannon, who has been coming out here every week to sit with her husband in the hospital at the junction, showed me a feather she found tucked under the shelter bench. Black as a wet pan, she said, and shaped as if someone had drawn it slowly because they loved drawing. We sat with it between us while a flock of small birds went up off the verge all at once, as if the road had shaken them loose. She laughed and said that was how it always went, one thing lifting off the next.

Before her bus came she wrote two words on the back of her ticket and pressed it into my hand. Stay strong, looped round in that long swooping hand that runs on like a river. I have it in my coat pocket now, next to the feather, which I did not have the heart to leave behind.

When the lorry finally pulls in I will climb up and go. Tell Mum not to worry. Tell her the sky out here is bigger than anything she ever painted.
