Strength hand lettering design
Lettering · Black and grey · Flash
The image shows the word Strength written in flowing, hand-drawn script in black ink on a plain white background. The letter S has a long, looping tail that sweeps down to the left, and the final letters end in a loop that forms an infinity-style flourish. The linework varies in thickness and is solid black with no shading or colour, so it reads as a stencil-ready lettering design.

Dad, the Mary Ellen came in at six with her hold near empty again, and Mr Coad stood on the quay with his cap in his hands and didn't say anything for a long while. I took the tea down to the slip anyway. You'd have laughed at me, a girl of nineteen with a flask and a tin of biscuits, but the men needed something warm and nobody else was going to think of it.

Mum has been at the net loft since Tuesday, re-hanging the trawl your crew tore on the Skerries. She sits on an upturned crate with the mesh across her knees and her needle going in and out, in and out, the knots coming tight as beads. She says the trick is to keep each loop open until the last moment, because a closed knot is a knot that will snap. I asked her whether that was a fact or something she tells herself, and she threw a ball of twine at me.
I've been thinking about the word chalked on the slate above the fish-market office, the one the harbour committee put up for the centenary. The rain has half taken it, so only the long tail of the first letter and the wide loop at the end still show clearly. Mr Coad says it's meant to look like rope. I think it looks more like a line that won't stop, running out past the edge of the board and curling back on itself.
Tomorrow the tide turns at four. Tie your end to the bollard the way I showed you, and don't let the others talk you into the deep water off the point. Come home with the hold full or come home with the boat, whichever the sea allows, but come home.
Love, Nell
