Up on the ninth floor of Harrow Court, where the lift had been broken since Easter, Maud Tennant kept a grey feather in a jam jar on the windowsill. She told the children on the stairwell that it had drifted down the shaft on the night her Ted walked out to the wharf for the last shift, and that it would keep turning until he came up the stairs again.

The children did not believe her. Mrs Okafor on the fourth floor half did, because she had lost a brother to the river. Each evening Maud unwound a length of blue wool from her knitting bag and tied it around the jar in a loop with no end to it, and each evening she said the same thing: whatever goes round without a break will always come back to where it started.

Winter came hard and the wool frayed. Maud sent Dev from the sixth floor, the only boy in the block who could climb, down to the lost property cupboard for a fresh spool. When he returned with it, the jar was empty and the feather lay on the sill. Outside, a grey shape was turning over the car park, drawing wider rings each time, always coming back to the same tower.

Maud wound the new wool twice around her wrist and told Dev that Ted had only ever been a long way off. Dev went home. The lift stayed broken, the feather stayed on the sill, and in spring nobody on the ninth floor moved it.
