Crescent moon and bow linework on a forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A black linework tattoo on the inner forearm combines a curved outline, a small crescent moon, a bow shape and a long sweeping line that curls at the end. The lines are clean and even, with solid black areas on the crescent and the lower curve. The skin tone is light and the image is shot straight on against a plain background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Mabel kept the lamps at Harrow Cross, a halt with one platform, a waiting room that smelt of coal dust, and a trough beside the goods siding. Every Thursday the moon came down low over the cutting to drink, and Mabel, who was nine that year, tied a length of blue ribbon to the signal wire so she could find the spot again.

One Thursday the ribbon was gone. The stationmaster said the wind had taken it, and when the moon rose it looked thinner than usual, its curve bent sharp at one horn, as if something had snagged it and pulled. Mabel took the lamp and a biscuit tin and walked the line east, where the rails bent away toward the sea.

She found the ribbon caught in the points at the bend. Wound through it was a long curl of grey string and a small silver hook that had been the moon's horn. She knelt on the cold ballast and worked them free with her fingernails, and the rails hummed under her palms the way they do when a train is still miles off.

The next Thursday the moon came down again, lighter on one side. It took the blue ribbon from the wire and left in its place a bow of silver thread, tied in the double loop her mother used on boots. Mabel still keeps it in the tin. When the last train has passed and the lamps are out, she ties a fresh loop into the dark and waits, and the moon always tugs it once, politely, the way a passenger touches a door before leaving.
