Single-line cat silhouette tattoo

Fine line · Black and grey · Photo

A single continuous black line forms the outline of a cat seen from behind, with pointed ears, a curved back and a tail that curls at the base. The linework is thin and even with no shading, and the design sits in the centre of the frame on plain skin. The tattoo is the only colour in an otherwise neutral, pale image.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The generator coughs behind the dodgem cars, and you're sitting on the caravan step with a tin of pilchards when the cat slips out from under the Waltzer. It doesn't look at you. It never looks at you, which is why Mrs Ainsley said a cat that won't look at you won't ask you for anything.

It walks away along the tent pegs with its tail up, and you follow the line of its back through the dark. The lights pick out the ridge of its spine, the two pointed ears, the tail hooking at the end like a question nobody has bothered to finish. It passes Ryder's coconut shy, the candy floss machine, the one bulb over the goldfish tent that never works. Everyone on the circuit says a cat that leaves without a farewell is only going ahead to keep your place for next season.

On the last night the lorries are already loaded and the fields outside Chelmsford are grey with dew. You crouch to set down the tin, and the cat is sitting at the gate with its back to you, waiting the way it always waits, as though the wait were the whole point. For the first time it turns its head. Its face is only a few pale marks and a pair of eyes that are no more interested in you than they ever were.

You pick up the tin again. The cat stands, stretches, and goes ahead of you down the lane, and you walk behind it, close enough to count the bends in its tail, until the road bends and it is gone.
