Chain, heart and paw print ankle tattoo
Fine line · Ankle · Mixed · Photo
A black fine line chain runs down from a small heart at the top of the frame towards a larger outlined heart that merges into an infinity loop. Three small paw prints in green, blue and purple sit inside the lower heart, while the rest of the design is in black ink on the ankle and top of the foot. The background shows grey fur, and the image is a close, centred view of the tattoo.

Tansy had been gone since the Thursday, and Iris Madden had stopped pretending she would come back on her own. She pulled her wellies on in the hall and knotted the frayed lead to her belt loop, though she knew it would be no use. The lurcher had slipped it at the sluice gate and gone over the stile like a thing thrown.

She walked the towpath toward Hobb's Lock, where the ground was still soft from the week's rain. The mud kept a trail: four round pads, then the splayed toes of a dog that never walked straight. Every few yards Tansy had stopped to nose at a dropped glove, a drowned crisp packet, the leg of a bench. Iris crouched beside one print and pressed her own palm into the wet, just to feel how small the gap between them was.
At the lock keeper's cottage a boy sat on the wall, painting stones with a tin of poster paint: green, blue, violet. He said the dog had come past at dawn and sat on his step, watching the road as if someone was late for her. He had given her half a sausage roll. He pointed up the lane without looking up from his brush.
Tansy was lying under the hawthorn at the field's edge, chin on her paws, her coat matted with burrs. She lifted her head when Iris said her name, then thumped her tail twice on the grass, as if she had only been keeping time. Iris clipped the lead on, and the metal chain of it clinked against the buckle. They walked home the long way, leaving prints beside prints all the way down.
