Lettering · Other · Black and grey · Photo

A black infinity symbol is tattooed on skin, with the words 'i feel infinite' written in a typewriter-style font, one phrase inside each loop. The outline is a soft, slightly feathered dark line with some tonal variation, and the lettering is crisp and solid black. The design is centred in the frame and photographed straight on under even light.

The rain had been coming off the canopy in ropes since eight, and by ten the stall smelt of wet cardboard and machine oil. I had four typewriters on the trestle and a tin of ribbons nobody wanted. The woman who stopped at the end of the row carried a bag of paperbacks and had the look of someone who had walked a long way to be somewhere she didn't want to be.

She lifted a grey portable, rolled a sheet of carbon into it without asking, and typed with one finger, slowly. Lower case only. i feel infinite. The e stuck halfway down its stroke, the way a key does when it has sat in a damp shed all winter. She laughed at that, a short surprised sound, and said it was the first thing in a month that had done exactly what she asked.

I asked what she was writing it for. She said it was for nobody, that the paper was just where the words went when she couldn't hold them. I told her my Dorothy used to type shopping lists on the same make, and the names of birds she saw from the kitchen window, always in lower case because she said capitals were for shouting. After she died I couldn't bring myself to go near the machine, so it sat in the loft with its ribbon going to dust. I offered the woman a fresh ribbon for a pound.

She paid for the ribbon and not the machine. Before she left she tore out the sheet, folded it into a square, and tucked it under my tin. When the rain eased I unfolded it. Under her two lines she had typed the sign itself, a figure eight lying on its side, and the loop had come out wide because the platen was tired. It ran down the page and off the bottom edge, and the last curve had gone back over the first, the way a thing does when it has nowhere to stop.
