"too much heart" lettering on upper back

Lettering · Back · Black and grey · Photo

The photograph shows the upper back of a person with hands resting on the shoulders, and no face is visible. The tattoo is the words "too much heart" in lowercase, set in a typewriter-style serif typeface with crisp, even black linework. The lettering sits horizontally across the upper back against a plain, warmly lit background.

The rain came sideways off the car park, and by eleven my tarpaulin had a belly full of water that I kept shoving off with a broom handle. Under it sat six typewriters I'd rescued from loft clearances, and one that wasn't mine. Mrs Okafor had left it on Thursday with a note tucked under the carriage: 'Fix the h. Tell me if it's worth keeping.' Its keys had yellowed like old piano teeth, and the h stuck every time I reached for it.

She came back on Saturday in a plastic mac, dripping on my floor, and she didn't ask about the machine so much as whether it still worked. I pulled the carriage, freed the arm with a drop of oil, and typed the phrase she'd written on the note: too much heart. The letters came up crisp and even on the card. She laughed at the spacing. 'My husband used to say that about me,' she said, 'when I cried at adverts and gave away the good coat.'

I told her the h would hold now, for a while, and asked what she owed. She shook her head and took the card, then pulled a stool up to the counter and, with two fingers and great deliberation, typed a line underneath it. She read it back to me and folded it into her pocket before I could see it properly.

The rain stopped about then. I took it as a verdict.
