By the time the buffet ran down to crisps and cling film, Marjorie had stopped pretending she was only here for the raffle. The sports hall at Ashby Grammar still smelt of floor wax and warm sausage rolls, and across the room Dennis Okafor was holding a paper plate as carefully as a hymn sheet, looking for someone to tell him he hadn't changed.

"You still do that thing with your pen," he said, sitting down beside her on the bench. "Loop, loop, lean. Like the letters are running for a bus."

She laughed, because she had done that thing in double chemistry for two years, pages of looping script, practised until the L leaned into the o just so. The note she had folded into a tight triangle and slid across the bench in the winter of 1987 had been all loops and leaning. One word, underlined twice, and then her nerve had gone and she had scribbled over it in biro before it could reach him.

"I never read it properly," Dennis said. "I got as far as the first letter and thought, that's a lot of effort for someone who sits next to me."

He took out his wallet, a battered brown thing, and there it was, soft as cloth, the crossings out gone grey at the edges. Beneath the scribble the pen had left a faint ghost of a heart, the L and the o still standing in the middle. Marjorie took the biro from her handbag, turned a raffle ticket over, and drew the heart again, the loops surer this time. "Finish the sentence," she said. "I'd like to see how it ends."
