Ysolde had been asked to restore the Carrow drum on a Tuesday, which on Halden Ring meant nothing, since the ring kept no days, only the shift bells. The drum held forty years of letters pressed into copper foil by a stylus, sent between a brother and sister on opposite arcs of the spinning station, where the gap between their bays was a three-hour walk around the hull.

Most of the letters were ordinary. Weather in the hydroponic bays, a dispute over a cracked kettle, the price of seal oil at the lower market. Then she reached the last sheet, a looping mark cut around its edge in a tight spiral, and beneath it a single word in a slanting hand that had hurried to fit inside the curve. Love. The loop had been drawn left to right until the stylus ran out of room.

She went back through the earlier sheets with a magnifier. He had never signed with a name, only that same loop, and each time the curls at its start were a little more confident, as if he had practised them over years until his hand knew the shape without thinking. Lina Carrow had kept every one, flattened and stacked in order, the foil gone soft at the corners from handling.

She wrote the restoration report in the standard form: condition fair, one foil torn and mended, content intact. In the box for remarks she wrote nothing for a long time. Then she added that the signature closed where it began, and left the rest of the box empty, because some things on a loop were meant to come back round.
