Love script on a wrist

Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A single word, Love, is written in a flowing black script across the inner wrist of a hand held up towards the top of the frame. The linework is fine and even, with a looped capital L and a small heart-shaped curl at its start. The image is in monochrome against a dark, low-light background with the skin lit softly from the front.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Dear Mr Haddow, I am writing this on the back of a dinner menu because the hotel stationery has run out and the bar has gone quiet in that way it does before the last round. You will not remember me. I was the girl who sat at the back of Year Nine and drew hearts in the margins of the Macbeth worksheets, and you once kept me behind to tell me my handwriting was too pretty for my own good. I thought about that for years.

Tonight at the reunion Denise Platt showed everyone the word she had put on her wrist after her divorce, a single word in looping black script with a little curl at the front like a question mark that had decided to be kind. Everybody cooed. Then Gavin Moss told a joke about tattoos and the cheap blue ink from the Blackpool piers, and Denise laughed harder than anyone. I watched her pull her cuff back down and I saw how carefully she did it.

I wanted to tell her that the word had been right, that the hand had been steady, that somebody who knows a loop from a scribble had clearly made it for her. Instead I bought her a gin and told her the pen she used in Year Nine was the same one I still write with. She didn't remember it. That was fine. Some lines only need to be drawn once to hold.

I am going to post this to the school office in the morning, so it will reach you slowly, the way your corrections always did. Thank you for the handwriting remark. I have never once written a word without hearing it.

Yours, with the margins still full, Jo Carrow
