Black fine line tattoo of the word love in cursive script joined to an infinity symbol, on the inner forearm.

Infinity symbol and script love on a forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A single-line infinity loop flows into the cursive word love, with the L's upper stroke rising above the loop. The linework is thin and even, in solid black ink with no shading. The design sits horizontally across the inner forearm against plain skin, with a blue cloth and a red object visible at the bottom edge of the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Sit yourself under the awning, love. The rain's come in off the river and it'll not be going anywhere till the stalls pack up, so you may as well hear the story of Asa Coyle and his ribbon. I tell it once a year, and the wet always wants me to.

Every Thursday on Brindle Market there was a man who sold ribbon from a barrow with one wheel that squeaked like a gull. He kept a bolt of black silk under the tarp, and he never sold a yard of it. When the rain came down, he'd take a length, pass it through his fingers in one long unbroken swoop, and tie the ends into nothing at all. The fishwives said he was counting something. The bakers said he was simple. He was neither, but he was patient, which is rarer.

One February a girl called Nell came up the cobbles with her mother's letters bundled in brown paper and nothing to tie them with. Asa cut her a yard of the silk. He looped it once, and as he pulled it tight he told her a thing a tradesman should never say: a loop made without a break never has to be finished, because it keeps going round and comes back to the place it began. She laughed and paid him a penny and walked off into the rain.

Forty years on, a woman with grey hair came to that same barrow, now rotten at the axle, and laid the ribbon on the wood. It was faded to the colour of ash, but the loop held. She asked Asa's nephew to tie a bow on it for her. He didn't know how. So she took the ends in her own fingers, and the old stroke ran through them like it had never stopped.
