In the hill kingdom of Carrowmere, where the river ran backwards in winter, a miller's daughter called Ysolt and a cooper's son called Tam had argued every market day since they could walk. Each morning she told him she loved him, and each evening he answered that he loved her more, and the village had long stopped listening to either of them.

One autumn the river froze and the ferryman went south with his boat turned over on his back. Tam walked the long road to the salt towns for work and came home with a grey cloak and a cough. Ysolt, who had kept count of every quarrel with knots in a length of string, found the string had gone slack. She went to the crossroads shrine, where the old women said a loop could be tied around a loving word, and asked the goddess of the road to make the word last.
The goddess, who was tired of mortals bargaining, said only: the loop has two ends, and whoever speaks last keeps the other. So Ysolt said the words, love you more, and the cold air took them and bent them into two curved strokes on the wind. One loop went with Tam on the salt road, grey as his cloak. The other stayed with her, green as the river in spring. Between them the words hung, written in her own hand, so that neither could read them without bending close.
Tam came home that winter and found the green loop waiting on the bridge. He tied his grey one to it, and the two of them have been arguing about who holds the knot ever since, which the old women say is exactly what the goddess intended.
