Black and grey tattoo of a dragonfly on a shoulder, with the script line 'I love you more than you know' trailing from its tail.

Dragonfly and script quote on shoulder

Fine line · Shoulder · Black and grey · Photo

A dragonfly with shaded wings and a slim body sits at the left of the frame, with a fine handwritten script line running from its tail across the skin. The linework is crisp and the wings are shaded in soft greys, with the body picked out in a slightly bluish tone. The composition runs diagonally across the skin, with the dragonfly as the main focal point and the lettering leading the eye to the right.

Do you remember the mill pond the summer you were seven? You caught a blue dragonfly in your cupped hands and wouldn't let it go until it stopped shivering. You held it up to your grandfather and said it looked like someone had drawn it with a very sharp pencil. He laughed so hard he had to sit on the sluice gate. That evening he wrote a line on the back of a seed catalogue and folded it into your satchel, and you copied it out every night for a month until your letters leaned over like reeds.

I found the catalogue in the drawer of the hall table last week. Under the prices for runner beans, in his square capitals, it says I LOVE YOU MORE THAN YOU KNOW. He never had words for anything except tomatoes and weather, so I think he must have practised that one for a long time before he dared use it.

Walk up the aisle slowly. If the sun holds, the dragonflies will be out over the water by the lych gate, and I want you to look at them on the way past. Then look for me. I'll be the one trying not to cry into a borrowed handkerchief.
