The boarding house at Skerrow Cove had one lodger who never paid in coin. She came in the spring with a canvas bag and a cough, and asked for the room over the kitchen, where the stove kept the damp off the walls. Nobody asked her name. The landlady, Hester Dunn, only asked whether she would take her porridge before the fishermen came in, and the lodger said she would, and she did, every morning for a year.

Behind the house ran a wall of black brambles that the sea wind had bent into curls. Hester cut at them every autumn, and every autumn they came back thornier. In the second spring a single rose pushed up through the stones of the yard, dark red as wine left in a glass, and it grew faster than any rose has a right to grow. Its stem climbed the wall in long swirling tendrils, and the small thorns along it caught the washing and tore the sheets. A blackbird with a broken wing took to sitting on the gutter above it and would not be shifted.
The lodger watched the rose from her window and said nothing for weeks. Then one night in February a boat did not come back to the cove, and the rose opened all at once, a bloom the size of a fist. Hester went out with the shears in her apron pocket, meaning to cut it for the funeral wreaths, and found the blackbird waiting on the stone with its beak full of petals it had plucked from the wall. It dropped them at her feet.
She did not cut it. She carried the petals up to the room over the kitchen, where the lodger sat with her hands in her lap, and laid them on the sill. 'He is not drowned,' the lodger said, 'only lost his way home.' By morning the boat was tied up at the quay, the rose had shed every thorn it had, and the lodger was gone, leaving the room swept and a single black feather on the pillow.
