Infinity symbol with sister quote

Lettering · Mixed · Photo

The image is a stacked pair of photographs of the same infinity symbol tattoo, with script lettering that reads there's no better friend than a sister in the top photo and there's no better sister than you in the lower one. The infinity loop and the lettering are rendered in black and grey with soft shading along the band, and a small solid red heart sits in the lower left of the loop. The skin is lit evenly and the tattoo fills the centre of each frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The ferry at Oswen Ford ran on a rope that looped from one bank to the other and back again, so the boat never truly got anywhere, only came round to where it started. My sister Mared steered it. I bailed, because I was eight years younger and nobody trusted me with the tiller, and because the river in the kingdom of Ysterlow was always trying to take something back.

The autumn the crown's surveyor came with his chains and his neat maps, he said the ford would be a bridge by spring and the ferry would become a thing for children's stories. He paid Mared in silver to sign the deed. She counted every coin twice and then, without a word, tied the rope off on the wrong post. That night the flood came down off the hills and the rope parted, and I was in the water before I understood I had leaned too far over the gunwale.

I remember the cold more than the fear. Her hand closed on my collar, then my wrist, and she did not let go even when the current had us both under the willows at the bend. We came ashore a mile downstream, where the river doubles back on itself, and lay in the mud until the stars came out. She wasn't angry. She was shaking so hard her teeth clicked.

In spring the bridge went up. Mared still keeps the old rope coiled on her kitchen wall, and the first time I walked across the new span I looked down at the posts and saw she had carved something into the nearer one years before, when we were children, in letters I had never once noticed. There's no better sister than you. I did not tell her I had seen it. Some things are better left going round.
