The hazel switch had been cut at midnight, and Ada Pell would not let Tom Mercer lay it down until the bell at St Cuthbert's had stopped ringing across the water. "Hold it flat," she said. "A thing laid crossways keeps two things from wandering off into the wood."

The two hearts were drawn in charcoal on the flat stone at the ford, one for each of them. Tom had drawn the first one the spring his father went under the ice, and Ada had drawn the second so that it leaned into his. The rain washed them out most weeks, and most weeks they climbed down the bank with a burnt stick between them and drew them again, because the old people said the wood took anyone who crossed the ford alone in autumn.
"Will it cut them apart?" Tom asked, his hands shaking on the switch.
"It goes through both and leaves each one whole," Ada said. "That's all a crossing stroke is for. It shows you where the lines meet and that neither one gave way."
He pressed the green wood across the stone. The bell stopped. The water ran clear over the two hearts, overlapping at the middle, and the single stick lay through them like a stitch. By the next spring the charcoal had long gone, but the hazel had taken root in the gravel at the ford, and the wood kept its distance from the path.
