Script quote and heart on the ribs
Fine line · Ribs · Mixed · Photo
Two photographs show the same tattoo on the side of the ribs, with two lines of black cursive script on the left and right panels. A thin outlined heart sits at the end of the text, with a small red ladybird detail on its lower edge. The ink is mostly black with one red accent, and the photos are close crops that keep the skin and text in focus.

Dear Nell,

The ovens were lit at half four this morning, same as every morning since you left, and I still reach for the second tray out of habit. Mr Okafor from the post office came in for his split tin and asked where my shadow had got to. I told him you'd gone to Leeds to be sensible, which he didn't believe either.
There was a ladybird on the flour sack by the back door, red as a cherry, walking the seam like it had a train to catch. I carried it out to the sill in the cold and watched it wander off toward the bins. Mum always said they bring luck if you let them go rather than squash them. I've decided she was right, so I've been letting things go lately, including the loaf that wouldn't rise yesterday.
Your card came with the Leeds postmark and the heart you drew badly in biro, with the little dot on its edge you said was a bug that had got lost. I read the line underneath, the bit about being kept in someone's heart, and I had to sit down on the flour bin. Nobody warns you that the hard part of a day apart is the kettle still boiling for two.
Sunday, first train, I'll be on it with a bag of rye and a tin of the good custard creams. Keep the light on in the back room. And don't you dare let the services talk you into anything.
Love, your daft sister, Bea
