Matching infinity heart tattoos on two calves

Fine line · Calf · Black and grey · Photo

Two people's lower legs are shown side by side, each with a black infinity symbol forming a heart outline. The words thick and thin are written in script within the loops, with the lettering flowing along the infinity line. The tattoos are solid black ink on skin, photographed against a pale floor with even lighting.

Sit close, the pair of you, for the wind off the Sound has teeth tonight. You want to hear about Morag Thick and Ailsa Thin, who kept the ferry on Scarra when the old boat was the only road off the island. Morag was broad as a barn door and could lift a ewe under each arm. Ailsa was a stick of a girl who could read the weather in the underside of a gull's wing. The mainland folk called them the two halves of a bad joke, and they laughed at that louder than anyone.

The trouble came the winter the line parted. A February gale snapped the rope with the doctor's cart half aboard, and the boat went drifting toward the Skerries with the tide. Morag went into the surf to her neck. Ailsa tied the spare line round her own waist, drove her heels into the shingle and held the mooring post with both hands. Neither let go until the boat was turned about. Nobody on the shore could say afterwards which of them had held the other.

They say the minister keeps a loop of that rope in the chapel now, knotted so the ends run back into each other without a break. He will tell you it is only a knot. But hold it up to the lamp and you can see the figure eight it makes lying on its side, and the old women say that is how you tell a promise from a bargain. In a bargain each side counts what it gives. In a promise, both ends are always holding on.
