Interlocking circles on an upper arm

Geometric · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

A cluster of overlapping circles with inner rings, dots and arc shapes runs diagonally across the upper arm. The thin black outlines are uniform, with light shading that gives the rings a little depth. The ink sits on a bare arm against a blurred, multicoloured fabric background.

The supply boat was late again, and the envelope it carried had been soaked and dried stiff, so the ink had bled into little grey moons. You turn it over on the kitchen table at Scarrow Head and find no words, only rings: a large circle with a smaller one knotted into its side, a dot sitting in the hollow of an arc, three circles overlapping like coins dropped on wet slate. Mrs Pellow, who brings the post, shrugs when you ask. The sender was a tall man who paid in old shillings and asked her to say the light must stay lit until someone answered.

You know this alphabet only because your grandmother copied it into the back of a ledger when you were small. She said her uncle invented it for passing notes in chapel. Each ring is a letter, each dot a vowel, and where the dot sits in the ring tells you whether the word is breathing in or out. It takes you until dusk, with the lamp already warm in its housing, to read the first line. It says: Do not climb the north stair tonight.

You climb it anyway, because the stair is the one place the wind cannot find you. At the top the lens is already turning, though nobody has wound the clockwork since Tuesday. Someone has scratched the same rings into the brass with a nail, and beneath them is a date that is tomorrow's.

You stand between the great glass and the black sea and understand the message was never a warning. It was a request to wait until you had drawn the circles yourself, and you hear the stair creak below, slow and patient, one step for every ring you have already copied into the margin of your own log.
