Black linework tattoo of three stacked circular symbols on the inner forearm, with a solid black swirling infinity-style knot in the middle.

Three stacked circle symbols on a forearm

Geometric · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

Three circular designs are stacked vertically along the forearm: an outlined rounded shape at the top, a solid black knot with spiral loops in the centre, and an outlined circle with glyph-like marks at the bottom. The linework is clean and even, with the centre motif filled in solid black for contrast. The tattoo is shown in black ink on pale skin, photographed straight on with the forearm filling most of the frame.

Dear Thomas,

The men from the council came on Tuesday to look at the north wall, and I am writing before the mortar goes back in so you can tell me I was right to stop them. Behind the loose bricks, where the ivy has been dragging the coping down for years, we found three flat stones stacked like coins. Each is the width of a saucer. The top one has a rounded outline with knobs along its edge, like a bean with the pods still on. The middle one is a knot of spirals that someone blacked with pitch so it would show through the dirt. The bottom one is a ring of hooked lines and small hollow dots, the sort of thing you would press into clay with a bramble stem.

Mrs Ashby from the cottage says her grandfather used to talk about a wall-builder who worked here before the war and charged a penny for every stone he set true. I took it for a tale to keep children off the wall, but the spirals have got into my head. The pitch in the middle is still tacky under my thumbnail, and it smells of the tar we used on the shed roof.

The young surveyor wanted them lifted for a museum. I told him the wall had stood without them for a hundred years and could stand a bit longer. He looked at me the way you looked at your father when he refused to sell the orchard, so I expect he has written me down as a difficult old woman.

So I have put them back exactly as they were, spirals facing the sun, and planted a clump of lavender at the foot of them. Come up at the weekend and we will see whether the bees find it before the frost does.

Your loving aunt, Margaret
