Circular Gallifreyan-style script on the calf
Fine line · Calf · Mixed · Photo
A black fine line circle contains arcs, dots and small loops arranged in a looping, script-like pattern. Behind the linework, soft pink, purple and teal washes create a watercolour effect that fades out toward the edges. The design is centred on the leg and the photograph is taken in strong daylight with shadows falling across the wall behind.

The seal came across the Sennet bridge hidden in the lining of a bread tin, which is how I knew the courier was lying about his cargo. Nobody hides a letter in bread unless the letter is worth more than the bread. I had the tin open on my counter by nine, under the hard light of the customs shed, and the wax disc inside was pressed with a circle no bigger than a coin.

Someone had worked the inside of it with a fine nib: arcs hooked like the blades of old scythes, dots sitting in the hollows, small loops strung together like beads on wire. My grandmother taught me the river script when I was eight, a cipher the lock guilds used for tolls and weights, and I read it the way you hum a tune whose words you have half forgotten. The top arc said nine barges, Tuesday. The dots beneath said ask for Oriel. The last loop, which took me the longest, said do not open before the bell.
The bell in that shed meant the three o'clock whistle from the lock keeper's hut. I spent the hour pretending to inspect loaves. When the whistle went I slid the disc back into its tin, stamped the manifest, and waved through a lorry of pewter spoons. Then I walked down to the water and found a girl sitting on the lock steps with a pocket full of pebbles and a rope she had not tied off.
Oriel was twelve and had memorised the circle backwards. She laughed when I read her own message aloud, then asked me to teach her the loops. I told her the script would keep. The river would not, and by dusk the barges were already sliding under the bridge, low and dark, and I was the only person on the bank who knew what they carried.
