Black and grey pencil drawing of an interlocking infinity knot tattoo design with shaded ribbon loops and pointed diamond-shaped crossings.

Interlocking infinity knot design

Fine line · Black and grey · Flash

A pencil drawing of a symmetrical knot design made from four looped ribbons that interlock with two pointed diamond-shaped crossings at the top and bottom. The ribbons are shaded with graphite to show depth and rounded form, with darker edges and lighter highlights along each band. The design sits centred on a plain white background with generous margins.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Dear Nell, the fishing boat is tied up at Ardrossan for three days while the engine gets its new gasket, so I have time to write properly for once. You will not believe what Mr Fairweather made me do. He had a length of tarred hemp on the quay and a sack of old ribbon from the cannery, and he told me to plait the two together into a knot that would never come undone. I said knots that never come undone are for fools and widows. He said a sailor should know the difference, and then he showed me the loop that goes round itself four times and comes out the other side looking like it never began.

It took me the whole afternoon and I cut my thumb twice. When I finally pulled it tight, the two diamond crossings sat at top and bottom like the points of a pair of old scissors, and the four lobes rose and fell in the light. Mr Fairweather held it up to the sun and said, that is what the tide does to a shoreline, it goes round and round and always brings you back to the same stone. I laughed at him, because he is always saying things like that when he has had a dram.

But here is the thing, Nell. This morning I went to the harbour office to ask about the Thursday sailing, and the clerk had left a pencil drawing of the very same knot pinned up behind his desk. He said a lad in Irvine had sketched it for a ferry company's crest and never got paid. I stood there a long while. I am going to ask Mr Fairweather whether he taught me that knot or whether it taught him. Write back soon, and tell Mum I have kept my thumb clean.

Your loving brother, Tam
