Iris with dotted chains on chest

Neo-trad · Chest · Colour · Photo

A large iris flower in shades of magenta, purple and orange sits centre-chest, with teal leaves curling from the top right. Bold black outlines and fine inner linework define the petals, and soft shading blends the colours across each one. Strings of black dots hang below the flower in graduated loops, framing the design against the skin.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The bells of Orrin had not rung since the flood, so Maud Tesker climbed the cathedral scaffold with a pot of bruised violet paint and a pocket full of glass beads. The window above the north door had gone grey in the winter damp. Its iris, the emblem of the drowned queen, had lost every petal to lead and rain.

The guild master said no one would pay for a flower. "Saints sell," he said, "not weeds." Maud did not argue. She cut the lead came herself, fitting magenta glass where the old blue had been, and where the petals curled she ran a thread of black lead like a river on a map. Along the hem of the window she hung strings of beads from the lead, one dot after another, so the light would drip onto the flagstones in pinpricks.

On the feast day the mayor's men climbed up to take the window down. They stopped beneath it. Sunlight came through the glass and laid a violet bloom across the floor, and under it the bead shadows swung like rosary chains on a slow tide. Nobody had prayed in that church for years, but a fishwife knelt on the stone and wept.

Maud was paid in eels and a cracked sieve. The guild wrote her name in the ledger where the window's name had been, though she never learned to spell it properly. Each spring after that, the iris came up through the frost on the north wall, the same colour as the glass, as if the flower had only been waiting for someone to bother.
