The chrysanthemums came good in the end, though not the way Dad planned. He had the north glasshouse pinched and disbudded back in June, every side shoot pulled off so the energy went to one crown, and then the pair of us stood in the damp watching nothing happen for six weeks. Mum used to say chrysanths know their own business. She was right. The spider-cut varieties took their time and then opened all at once, as if they'd been holding a meeting.

The big bloom on the bench by the door is the colour of crushed plums going pink at the edges, and its petals curl back on themselves like they want a better look at the room. I've kept the smaller bud on its thin wire stem apart from it, on purpose. It isn't ready and I won't have anyone telling it otherwise. Ruth from the village came round with her secateurs asking for a bunch for the chapel, and I told her to come back Thursday. She laughed, then saw my face and didn't.

Thursday is the day the bud should open, if the cold holds off. I've pinned a note to the door that says Do not cut. You'll think I've gone soft, and maybe I have a bit. Come down if you can. Bring your own gloves, the leaves bite.
