Purple lily and stars on upper back
Botanical · Back · Mixed · Photo
A large floral tattoo covers the upper back, centred on a violet lily with pale peach lilies on either side. Stars, a small crescent moon and black scrolling swirls surround the flowers and trail down towards the lower back. The petals use soft grey shading and fine dark outlines, and the purple and peach colours stand out against the grey background shadows.

Tomas had the wheel at four bells when the fleet's lights began winking out behind the Dogger Bank, one trawler at a time, as the others turned for home. He kept his eyes on the thin crescent moon low over the port bow and the scatter of stars above it, the way his grandfather had taught him aboard the Ada Sheard, back when a man navigated by what he could see and trusted the rest to the sea. The Violet Lily had never needed a chart she couldn't do without.

The net was still down. Skipper Hale had a rule about the last haul, and Tomas knew it by heart: nobody hauled until the stars were properly out, because the fish rose close to the surface in the dark and the boat rode easier under a clear sky. Below deck the cook was singing something off-key about a girl in Scarborough. Tomas heard the winch groan and the cable run out, and a gull settled on the rail and regarded him as if he owed it money.
When the net came up heavy, silver and thrashing in the lamplight, the crew cheered loud enough to wake the galley. Hale slapped Tomas on the back and said the lily had brought them luck again. Tomas didn't argue. He thought about the purple flower on the transom, the pale ones either side of it like sisters who had never quite agreed, and the stars strung out behind them down the wake.
As the boat turned for port, Tomas took a pencil from his pocket and, on the back of the tally sheet, drew a small crescent and a star beside the day's count, the way his grandfather used to mark the good nights. Then he set the wheel for home and let the moon sit on the bow.
