Iron Born lettering with arrow on a forearm

Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A black lettering tattoo reads IRON BORN in block capitals, with a thin black arrow passing through the words and ending in a small decorative tip on the right. The skin around the lettering is red and slightly irritated, with a few dark marks, so the tattoo may be fresh. Above it sits a grey spiderweb, and below are a grey dagger and a shaded cup, against a pale indoor background.

The snow had shut the Hollin Pass by noon, and by dusk the only light on the valley road was the lamp over the door of the Crooked Heron. My aunt Maud kept the place with a poker in one hand and the ledger in the other. She did not hold with strangers who came in dripping and asked for brandy before they had given their names.

The man who came in at the ninth bell gave his name as Jory Vane and nothing more. He had a dagger strapped to his forearm under the wet sleeve, and when he set his palm flat on the bar, the iron showed faintly through the skin like a second set of bones. Maud studied it for a long time. Then she poured him a measure of plum spirit and said the cellar was warm if he kept his boots off the stairs.

He did not sleep, and neither did I. Frost had grown a grey web across the corner of the upper window, and each time the wind lifted the shutter the threads shivered and seemed to lean towards the candle. Near midnight I found him in the taproom, turning his pewter cup in slow circles on the table while a spider came down from the beams to see what he was about.

In the morning the drifts had been cleared from the road and Jory was gone. He had left the cup upside down on the sill with a silver coin beneath it, and pinned under the coin with a dagger's point was a strip of paper. It said IRON in square capitals, and nothing else. Maud says the pass will open for him any winter he cares to come back.
